Generation 1: Sarah Bitner was born 3 May 1802 in Tennessee, and although a marriage license has not been found, family Bible records show that her husband was John Kitchen Dawson, born in 1897 in VA. Their first child was born in 1829 in Tennessee and their second child was born in 1834 in Rush County, Indiana.

An exhaustive study of the Bitner family has not been undertaken, and few Bitner researchers of Tennessee have been identified. To date, only a handful of Bitners have been located on any early record in Tennessee. At this point, research has been limited to Tennessee census records.

The census records for Tennessee in 1800, 1810, and 1820 have been lost. However, Sistler's Early Tennessee Tax Lists name only John Bitner of Greene County, TN, in 1805; John Bitner of Washington County, TN, in 1814; and Margaret Bitner of Washington County, TN, in 1819.

Margaret Bitner was enumerated in 1830 in Washington County, TN, age 40-50, with two males age 16-20, and one female, age 16-20. William Bitner was enumerated in 1830 in Greene County, TN, age 30-40, with wife and seven children.

Margaret Bitner appeared again in Washington County, TN, in 1840, age 50-60, with one male, age 20-30. Also enumerated there in 1840 were Nicholas Bitner, age 20-30, with wife and young son. William Bitner was again in Greene County, TN, in 1840, age 40-50, with wife and nine children.

Sarah Bitner may be related to Stephen Bitner, who was born in 1811 in Tennessee, and who died in Rush County, IN, in 1870. Contact has been made with researchers who descend from Stephen Bitner, but to date, they have been unable to link him to his parents in Tennessee.

Sarah Bitner and John Kitchen Dawson named their children James Dawson, Mary Jane Dawson, Louisa C. Dawson, Rachel E. Dawson, John M. Dawson, Benjamin F. Dawson, and Sarah E. Dawson.

Generation 2: Mary Jane Dawson, born 1834 in Rush County, IN, married William Wilshire Williams in 1850 in Keokuk County, IA. They were the parents of four children, Sarah Catherine "Cassie" Williams, James F. "Jim" Williams, Martha Josephine "Joey" Williams who married William L. Bill Spence, and Eva M. "Ehvie" Williams who married Henry C. "Clem" Tutt.

Generation 3: Sarah Catherine Williams, born 1853 in Keokuk County, IA, married James Marshall McCorkle in 1872 in Cherokee County, KS, and they were the parents of nine children. She died in 1934 in Miami, Ottawa County, OK.
